Public Participation GIS or Participatory GIS is a range of methods of using geographic information systems (GIS) with communities for the purpose of development, and various forms of land and environmental management. Naturally, as one uses such a technology with various communities, issues of possible localisation can be considered.
It has been suggested that PGIS is more applied in the contexts found in the global South (hence Africa) and PPGIS in the global North. However others seem to use the terms interchangeably.
