Aspiration is a US non-profit organization. Its "mission is to connect nonprofit organizations with software solutions that help them better carry out their work." (from the Aspiration site) It is based in San Francisco, California.

Aspiration was a co-organiser of the Africa Source II event in Uganda in 2006, and has been active in localisation and FOSS.

Description

Its activities are in 3 areas (from the Aspiration site):

  • connect and strengthen physical communities of nonprofit users and software developers by convening and facilitating innovative technology events
  • connect and strengthen virtual communities of nonprofit users and developers through the Social Source Commons, which maps out available software tools and related information resources
  • provide capacity building services, working with software developers to produce better tools for nonprofits, and with nonprofits to better leverage these tools.

We are pleased to hold space for nonprofits to come together for 1-hour, no-cost, lunchtime tech seminars and webinars. Every seminar and webinar is open to nonprofit staff to discuss organizational communications processes and strategies.

  • Calendaring Messaging for your Nonprofit
    May 14, 2013, 12pm - 1pm

    Scheduling your campaign and organizational messaging ahead of time can help to maximize its potential value. This live seminar will explain the process of creating and maintaining a messaging calendar.

  • HTML Email Newsletters for Nonprofits
    May 22, 2013, 12pm - 1pm

    Email Newsletters are used by many nonprofit organizations to effectively reach their audiences. Using a WYSIWYG can suck. This live seminar will focus on learning and incorporating HTML and CSS for Email Newsletters.

  • Effective Online Communications for Nonprofits
    June 11, 2013, 12pm - 1pm

    Bring your real time online communications need and challenges to this live seminar. We’ll talk about best practices to making effective use of different online channels.

  • Building a Listening Dashboard
    June 25, 2013, 12pm - 1pm

    Many nonprofits use online communications channels to propagate messages. Help make your online communications more responsive, dynamic, and effective by building a listening dashboard during this live seminar.

  • Effective Messaging Across Online Channels
    May 23, 2013, 11am - 12pm

    This online, collaborative training is designed to help nonprofits make sense of using different online tools like Facebook, Twitter, and blogs. As well have an opportunity to analyze real examples of effective messaging related to reaching and engaging target audiences on different channels.

  • How to write a Nonprofit Tech RFP
    June 6, 2013, 11am - 12pm
    The “Request for Proposal” process can be a critical yet daunting element of any well-executed technology project. During this interactive online seminar Aspiration will demonstrate templates and processes we use for “RFP Coaching.”

Having Fun at CA Tech Fest with Mozilla Teach the Web tools

We had an amazing time at the #CATechFest Coachella on May 3 - 4, 2013 with the California crew of young folks, nonprofit staff, capacity builders, and community organizers.

Many folks shared what they were passionate about and created awesome sessions during the 2-day technology convening. We even had the chance to throw in some new sessions around the Mozilla Web Maker tools and Mozilla Open Badges.

Aspiration's Online Accounts Inventory

Thanks for your interest in the Building an Online Accounts Inventory Seminar.

As online tools proliferate and places where organizations store data online enumerate and scatter, Aspiration recommends that organizations keep track of all of the accounts created for organizational use and all of the places where organizational data lives online.

The following are the materials used during the training. These materials are distributed under a Creative Commons license, and we encourage re-use, modification, and re-distribution in any situation where they may be useful.

Strategic Tech Teach-In

Aspiration is delighted to invite you to the Strategic Tech Teach-In, taking place in Oakland, California from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Tuesday, March 26th. The event is made possible by the generous support of the Mitchell Kapor Foundation.

This one-day event will provide nonprofit organizations with an opportunity to explore best practices in nonprofit tech, raise their questions and concerns, and learn how others are applying digital and mobile tools in support of their social change efforts.

The agenda will be richly interactive and participant-driven. The focus will be on dialog and collaboration, and a primary objective will be to establish opportunities for participants to build and strengthen relationships where they can share knowledge and find support. We will engage registered participants before the event to invite thoughts and suggestions on what should be on the agenda and what kinds of outcomes will make time at the event well spent.

Kicking Off 2013 in the Bay

We could not be more jazzed about the way we’ve been spending our days lately. Here at Aspiration we’ve been very pleased to embark on a whirlwind tour of our Bay Area.
