Localisation guide now available in Spanish

I just uploaded the Spanish translation of the FOSS localisation manual I wrote a while ago. Many thanks to Lucía Morado Vázquez and Silvia Rodríguez Vázquez for their work to make it happen.

It is titled "La localización al servicio de un cambio sostenible" (PDF) with subtitle "Guía de localización de software libre y de código abierto". The manual is now available in four languages (English, French, Arabic and Spanish).

I still need to find a way to publish it with the covers — we had to create the covers as separate PDF documents for the sake of our printers, and the first way I tried to combine the documents resulted in hyperlinks being lost in the resulting PDF.

Speaking of printing: we printed copies of the other three languages for our training events around Africa, but the Spanish version came later and was completely a volunteer effort separate from the activities of ANLoc. What is the best way to try to get some of these printed? I'm sure a few people would be interested in a hard copy.

Survey about the usability of Virtaal

A student at the University of Mainz in Germany, Almana Mukabenova, is doing some research on the usability of the translation tool Virtaal. She prepared a questionnaire for the purposes of her master's thesis:

I'm very interested to see what comes out of this, and want to encourage all users of Virtaal (past and present, serious and casual) to take part if they can.

Firefox (maybe) now most popular in Africa

According to Statcounter Firefox was the most popular web browser in Africa in September 2011. Here is the graph with their statistics:
http://gs.statcounter.com/#browser-af-monthly-201109-201109-bar

It is a close call, but the trends are clear: Internet Explorer is becoming less popular, while Firefox and Chrome are still increasing in popularity and together already take up about 60%. Of course it is hard to say how accurate StatCounter's statistics are or how representative it is of reality, but it is still interesting to see.

Although Firefox's popularity isn't on the increase everywhere I believe that the release of Firefox 7 last week can sway things increasingly in Firefox's favour. Naturally the upcoming versions will bring further improvements, but the competition is unlikely to just stand by and watch.

Firefox is available in an increasing number of languages from Africa, and it may just have an increasing influence in Africa in the future.

Lokaliseringsgids nou beskikbaar in Spaans

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NV9YFJR

Firefox (dalk) nou gewildste in Afrika

Volgens Statcounter was Firefox die gewildste webblaaier in Afrika in September 2011. Hier is die grafiek met hulle statistiek:
http://gs.statcounter.com/#browser-af-monthly-201109-201109-bar
