Ethnologue lists the classification as: Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, Benue-Congo, Bantoid, Southern, Narrow Bantu, Central, G, Gogo (G.10)

It is spoken in central Tanzania around Dodoma. (Webbook)

4. Dialect Survey / Enquête de dialecte

No complete dialect survey is known to us. Derek Nurse writes that "Gogo is felt to have three dialects: ci-nyambwa, spoken west of Dodoma; ci-nyaugogo, spoken around Dodoma; ci-tumba, spoken east of Dodoma." (Webbook)

Nyambwa (West Gogo), Nyaugogo (Central Gogo), Tumba (East Gogo). Lexical similarity 50% with Hehe and Sangu, 48% with Kimbu, 45% with Nilamba. (Ethnologue)

Gogo is a local language. (Webbook)

Ethnologue has the following notes concerning language use: Vigorous. Used in meetings by the Anglican church.
