Telecentres (telecenters) are set up by projects for community access to computers and the internet. There is an increasing amount of work and study in this area. It is important for localisation efforts to try to work with telecentres and telecentre projects, to understand their needs and objectives, and also to help them understand the usefulness of internationalising their computers and using localised software and content.
This is a temporary "experimental" page. A separate wikigroup on telecentres and localisation in Africa will probably be set up in the near future. If you are interested in working on this, please let us know here: PAL-Telecentre-Project.
An annotated literature review on telecentres produced by Isabella Rega at http://www.cidcm.umd.edu/ICT/telecentres/index.htm
"telecentre.org is a collaborative initiative that supports and strengthens the telecentre movement. We believe that information and communication technology, used locally, can empower individuals and communities. Our vision is to build a knowledge society from the ground up."
This is a list used for discussion of telecentres in adcance of the WSIS. It is still active. (No RSS feed yet - the group info page is at http://mailman-new.greennet.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/telecentres where you can also access the archives.)
